When Life Robs You..

Mental Illness

Mental Health is an industry..

An industry trying to sell an unsuspecting public on the idea that the way to ‘fix’ unwanted behaviour and feelings is with a brain chemistry altering pill.

These pills are now named ‘lifestyle’ drugs..

So now you can live your life in a way that is not ‘your truth’ and not feel too bad about it.

And after all if everybody’s doing it then it must be okay.

Maybe I have a problem with the way they are marketed, or that people use them long term without making changes in their lives.. believing their minds are deficient in some way..

So why do I felt so strongly …  because I suffered from chronic depression for 40+ years and I learnt a great deal..

The real problem is we were not born to be mindless sheep.. we were born to have personal power.

Some of us lost ours…  some very early on due to abuse, neglect, trauma, others guilt or bad decisions or a combination.

… life has robbed us..

I have always found people who experience depression or emotional, spiritual or psychological suffering to be deep thinkers, highly intelligent, visionaries, idealists, creatives, sensitives, salt of the earth types.

They ‘see’ things as they really are but all too often they remain passive to change anything. Often out of fear or that they allow themselves to get pulled along by the wolves of this world.

They fail to see the power they truly have and end up instead ‘willing victims’. They conform and lose their voice.

This causing internal unrest, distress and confusion- really a great lack of inner peace, as they are not being true to themselves or their beliefs or even who they really are..

Being a sheep is never a great option for those of vision.. that indeed would make you depressed, distressed, and have your mind fluctuating between what is right for you and what is wrong for you..

I have alway seen them as the sensitive good in an often evil world. I see them as people who have important gifts.

I just wish they could see themselves as that and get up, get constructively angry, look at the big picture on what they need to heal and go on to make their own small but significant mark in this crazy and often evil world.

Maybe they need that as motivation to get up, to heal their life, to change, to live their dream and to take back their personal power.. than some ‘lifestyle’ pill.

People suffering with depression and mental confusion need to allow themselves the time and space to heal. They need courage and encouragement, love, warmth, understanding, compassion, someone trustworthy to hear them, to look into their pasts, to gain self respect, self love, self compassion and self confidence and to take back their power.. and live their dreams.. whether that be to assist others in some healing way, bring beauty into this world, or love and compassion, make healthy changes in industry, politics, medical fields etc..

Your vision is needed..

Love and baby steps,

What to Do When You Don’t Know Your Next Step

"I've looked into the sky a hundred times and I've seen the stars that shine so bright. I'm sure that one of them is you, my friend, watching and waiting and hoping that I'll be alright." - Moonpools and Caterpillars

What do you do when you feel lost and don’t know what your next step is going to be?

What do you do when life no longer wants to help you achieve the many things you so desperately wanted to achieve?

What do you do when nothing you do seems to be right anymore, and when all your dreams, goals and plans seem to be falling apart?

For those of us who are very attached to this picture we have in our head of how life it’s supposed to be and how everything should function in this world, having things go different then expected can be quite a fearful, shocking and terrifying experience.

We like to think that we are in control of ourselves and our lives. We like to think that we are in control of what happens in our relationships, our homes and in the world around us, but he truth of the matter is that we have little or no control over any of these things. In fact, most of us have no control over our own thoughts and feelings, let alone the lives of those we love and the world we live in.

A Course In Miracles speak about this so beautifully: “You who cannot even control yourself should hardly aspire to control the universe.”

Life has its own path, it’s own rhythm, its own flow and its own purpose, and our job is not to control life, but rather to go with the flow of life. Our job is to follow the rhythm of life and not try to disrupt the natural flow of things.

When we try to interfere with the natural flow of life. When we make all kind of rigid plans and then desperately try to adjust life according to them, we can’t help but get hurt. How can you not get hurt when, instead of going with the natural flow of life, we desperately try to push against it? Thinking that our plans are better than the ones life has for us. And assuming that we are smarted and wiser than life itself.

Woody Allen once said that “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” And even though for a very long time I couldn’t really understand what these words meant, because you see, I knew we have free will and that we are the creators of our own lives, I eventually got it.

You see, I have come to realize that there are two sides to us. There is the mind created self who is fearful and selfish, constantly seeking for love, approval and validation in other people, in things, experiences, etc.. Constantly striving, but never arriving. This side of us that is rigid, attached to how things should be, how life should unfold and how everyone should behave. And who has no interest in letting go of control and putting its trust in life. And then you have the real you, which I like to call the Soul, or your Authentic Self.

This side of you is overflowing with love. Love for yourself and love for the world around you. This side of you knows the reason of your existence, and the purpose of your life. It recognizes itself in all things and all people, and it knows that everything that happens in your life, it’s meant to serve you, to grow you and to strengthen you. This side of you lives in peace, joy and harmony, and loves to go with the flow of life. It has no interest in clinging, in controlling or getting attached to rigid ideas, plans and concepts about how life should be and it seems to have no difficulties in trusting in the wisdom of life and dancing to life’s rhythm. And when you “get lost”, when you feel lost, it’s usually because these two sides switch places. Not because they want to, but because the real you, your Soul, is a lot stronger and a lot more powerful than your mind created self, and it’s constantly seeking to bring you back to the light, and back to living the life you are meant to live. Wanting you to experience your own beauty and perfection, allowing your light shine as brightly as possible so that others can recognize themselves in your own light and start living their lives from the Soul level as well.

“It is good to feel lost… because it proves you have a navigational sense of where “Home” is. You know that a place that feels like being found exists. And maybe your current location isn’t that place but, Hallelujah, that unsettled, uneasy feeling of lost-ness just brought you closer to it.” ~ Erika Harris

So you see, when you get lost and don’t know what the next step is going to be, you shouldn’t be scared, since getting lost is just another attempt of your real self to bring you back on your life path. Back to helping you craft your life on a strong, loving and healthy foundation. Your Soul is there to guide you, to lead you and to help you take the necessary steps towards creating the truthful, loving, joyful and balanced life you truly deserve. Teaching you how to let go of the need to control everything, and helping you to relax into life. When you feel lost, your Soul is trying to get your attention, reminding you to be soft like water. To let go of fixed plans and concepts and allow events to follow their natural course. To surrender to what is and trust that by doing so, life will take great care of you. Because it will.

P.S. In my next post I’ll share with you a list of things that you ca do as you work towards finding your way back into the light and back to walking the path your Soul is meant to be walking. So keep an eye on your email :)

With all my love,

Are You An Old Soul?

jason vandenberg.

There is a special kind of person in our world who finds himself alone and isolated, almost since birth.

His solitary existence isn’t from a preference or an antisocial temperament – he is simply old. Old in heart, old in mind and old in soul, this person is an old soul who finds his outlook on life vastly different and more matured than those around him. As a result, the old soul lives his life internally, walking his own solitary path while the rest around him flock to follow another. Perhaps you’ve experienced this in your own life, or have witnessed it in another person? If so, this article is dedicated to you, in hopes that you will come to define yourself, or understand another better.

The “Old Soul”

"The eyes indicate the antiquity of the soul" -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Robert Frost, Eckhart Tolle and even Nick Jonas have been called them. Perhaps even you have? I did.  Like many of them, this self discovery was made upon meeting Sol, who told me about his childhood as a precocious, intelligent boy who would befriend the teachers instead of the students, just because they were too different from him. As he related his inability to find interest in and connection to the people his age, I discovered that I felt the same, and still do.

If you have not yet discovered whether you’re an old soul, read some of the revealing signs below.

You tend to be a solitary loner.

Because old souls are disinterested in the pursuits and interests of the people in their age groups, they find it dissatisfying to make friends with people they find it hard to relate to. The result is … old souls tend to find themselves alone a lot of the time. People just don’t cut it for them.

You love knowledge, wisdom and truth.

Yep … this seems a little grandiose and overly noble, but the old soul finds himself naturally gravitating towards the intellectual side of life. Old souls inherently understand that knowledge is power, wisdom is happiness and truth is freedom, so why not seek after those things? These pursuits are more meaningful to them than reading up on the latest gossip about Snooki’s latest boyfriend, or the latest football scores.

You’re spiritually inclined.

More emotional old souls tend to have sensitive and spiritual natures. Overcoming the confines of the ego, seeking enlightenment and fostering love and peace are the main pursuits of these young-in-body Mother Teresa’s. To them it seems the wisest, most fulfilling use of time.

You understand the transience of life.

Old souls are frequently plagued with reminders of not only their own mortality, but that of everything and everyone around them. This makes the old soul wary and at times withdrawn, but wisely dictates the way they live their lives.

You’re thoughtful and introspective.

Old souls tend to think a lot … about everything. Their ability to reflect and learn from their actions and those of others is their greatest teacher in life. One reason why old souls feel so old at heart is because they have learnt so many lessons through their own thought processes, and possess so much insight into life situations from their ability to quietly and carefully observe what if going on around them.

You see the bigger picture.

Rarely do old souls get lost in the superficial details of getting useless degrees, job promotions, boob jobs and bigger TV’s. Old souls have the tendency to look at life from a birds eye view, seeing what is the most wise and meaningful way to approach life. When confronted with issues, old souls tend to see them as temporary and passing pains that merely serve to increase the amount of joy felt in the future.  Consequently, old souls tend to have placid, stable natures as a result of their approach to life.

You aren’t materialistic.

Wealth, status, fame, and the latest version of iPhone … they just bore old souls. The old soul doesn’t see the purpose of pursuing things that can be easily taken away from them. Additionally, old souls have little time and interest for the short-lived things in life, as they bring little meaning or long lasting fulfillment for them.

You were a strange, socially maladaptive kid.

This is not always the case, but many old souls exhibit odd signs of maturity at young ages. Often, these children are labelled as being “precocious”, “introverted”, or “rebellious“, failing to fit into the mainstream behaviors. Usually, these children are extremely inquisitive and intelligent, seeing the purposelessness of many things their teachers, parents and peers say and so, and either passively or aggressively resisting them. If you can talk to your child like he/she’s an adult – you’ve probably got an old soul on your hands.

You just “feel” old.

Before putting a name to what I felt, I experienced certain sensations of simply being an “old person” inside. The feelings that accompany being an old soul are usually: a feeling of world wariness, mental tiredness, watchful patience, and detached calmness. Unfortunately, this can often be perceived as being aloof and cold, which is only one of many Old Soul Myths.

Just as some old people describe themselves as being “young at heart”, so too can young people be “old at heart”.
