Snacking can be a huge downfall of a healthy lifestyle. Thankfully, you don’t have to go hungry between meals. Here are some great ways to keep your metabolism boosted with delicious and healthful choices. Some of these ideas are absolutely to die for and yet healthy as can be! Who knew snacking could be so yummy AND good for you?

Healthy Orange & Basil ‘Ice Cream’

Three ingredients and tastes yum!

Good lord I used to overeat when I was stressed, ice cream was once my No. 1 binge food.. It didn’t make me look good, feel good or act good… but boy did it taste good! Pretty sure I was a sugar addict..

These days I never emotionally binge on junk food. First up I can’t afford to, it flares up my immune conditions, secondly I identify what/ who has hurt me and deal with it, and thirdly I love myself too much and I love feeling vibrant, balanced and energized (it was a process to get here ..)

I’ll be slowly adding some of my favorite super easy and super yum recipes for those of you who have sensitivities, illness, anxiety or high stress levels. These natural treats are healing, anti-inflammatory foods that make excellent and easy alternatives to those junk food cravings.. they keep you balanced and energized especially during stressful times..

4 Frozen bananas (slice and freeze overnight)

1 Tbsp zest of Orange

2 fresh Oranges (remove skin)

2 Basil leaves

(I find it sweet enough but you can add a sweetener if you wish – like Tbsp natural honey)

Blend in Vitamix or similar and serve. (Serves 1-2)

Healthy Date & Cinnamon ‘Ice Cream’

Four ingredients!

This is easy to make, delicious and super healthy. The little date chunks taste like gooey caramel! I have bananas ready in the freezer for anytime I feel like something sweet. Give it a try..

Best Ever Bliss Balls

I made these bliss balls for Mother’s Day last week. These treats are healthy and have a delicious caramel flavour. They are extremely easy to make, takes 10 minutes tops! For those of you on restricted diets, they’re vegan, dairy free, gluten free, grain free and contain no refined sugars.

They’re perfect to pair with a cup of tea or as a snack on the go.

Use organic dried apricots that don’t contain harmful sulphur dioxide. The loss of this additive is what gives the naturally dried apricots their brown colour and caramel taste. The sulphur dioxide process is banned in organic production. Sulphur dioxide is not good for your body, it causes lung irritation and other respiratory and blood related problems.

This recipe makes about 20 to 30 balls depending on the size you make them.


1 cup of raw almonds

1 cup of shredded coconut

10 large pitted fresh dates

1/4 cup of dried organic apricots

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

2 tablespoons of water

1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil

1/4 cup of desiccated coconut for rolling


Grind the almonds and coconut in your food processor until reasonably fine. Add the dates, vanilla extract, water and melted coconut oil. Process the mixture until a dough forms. Add the apricots and pulse until coarsely chopped. Roll into balls with your hands. Roll the balls in desiccated coconut – cacao powder or crushed nuts would also be nice.

Refrigerate for a couple of hours before serving, and keep stored in the fridge for up to a week (if they last that long!) in an airtight container.

I purchased a high powered blender about 6 months ago and it’s just been the best investment. I decided not to buy a ‘Vitamix’ due to the hefty price they are in my country, but the one I eventually got was quarter of the price, works just as well and I’m really happy with it :o)

Smoothies have now become a big part of my life and I love them!

I try (key word…try!) to eat a predominantly raw diet because it gives me stable health and energy. I feel really well when I eat this way. My skin glows, my hair shines and I feel strong and beautiful. I get sick very quickly eating processed foods, sugars, too many grains or carbs. My hair falls out, my skin dries out and I’m lethargic.

It just isn’t right for my body, it’s poison to my system and my body lets me know about 5 mins after I eat it!!

I am not critical of what anyone else eats. I do not preach about how everyone should be vegan or raw or this or that because I don’t believe everyone should be vegan or raw. I believe eat what you need to eat at the time. If you feel you need meat, eat it, if you feel you need warming food, eat it.

I just try to eat the least processed or the healthiest version of what I want. If I feel like meat or protein (generally when I’m very stressed), I’ll eat fish and if I feel like something sweet and ice creamy I’ll blend up frozen bananas and berries and maybe add agave if I crave really sweet. If I need warm or comforting food (maybe I feel sad or tired at the time), I’ll eat cooked whole carbs like legumes brown rice etc..

When I’m balanced I eat raw because that’s what I want. That means fruit, smoothies and huge salads.

As you can see what I eat is very tied to my emotional or physical state at the time.

Hence the saying… “It’s not what you eat, it’s what’s eating you”

I believe in taking responsibility for our own emotional, physical and spiritual state of health, and that good health is a choice.

My personal goal is to feel great, look great, be well, live well and have energy for my life, my dreams and to give to others.

It’s been a process trying to get there :o)

For anyone who feels low in mood or energy especially after eating, think about investing in a high powered blender and adding a smoothie for a daily substitute for breakfast and afternoon tea –  it’s a small change in creating strength, better health and more energy and a good starting point.
